PROTECTION OF THE PUBLIC

OUR OFFICE CONTINUALLY SEEKS TO IMPROVE ITS EFFICIENCY AND ATTRIBUTIONS OF OUR PERSONNEL.  OCCASIONALLY, INVESTIGATIONS BY INTERNAL AFFAIRS DISCLOSE FAULTY PROCEDURES THAT OTHERWISE MAY HAVE GONE UNNOTICED.

PROTECTION OF THE EMPLOYEE

REMOVAL OF UNFIT PERSONNEL

THE FUNDAMENTAL PURPOSE OF THE INTERNAL AFFAIRS PROCESS IS THE AFFIRMATION AND ASSURANCE OF PROFESSIONAL CONDUCT WITHIN THE SHERIFF’S OFFICE.  IT IS IMPORTANT THAT ANY INTERNAL AFFAIRS PROCESS PROTECTS THE PUBLIC, PRESERVES THE INTEGRITY OF THE AGENCY, SAFEGUARDS THE RIGHTS OF INDIVIDUALS INVOLVED, AND ENSURES FAIR TREATMENT OF ALL CONCERNED.

CORRECTION OF PROCEDURAL PROBLEMS

THE COLLETON COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE IS COMMITTED TO ENSURING THAT OUR EMPLOYEES PERFORM THEIR DUTIES WITH PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE AND DISCIPLINE.  THE INTEGRITY OF CCSO IS ENHANCED BY OPEN COMMUNICATION BETWEEN CITIZENS AND OUR AGENCY.

THEREFORE, ALL COMPLAINTS, WHETHER BY CITIZENS OR EMPLOYEES, WILL BE THOROUGHLY INVESTIGATED.  AT NO TIME SHOULD A CCSO EMPLOYEE DISCOURAGE, INTIMIDATE, OR OTHERWISE COERCE ANYONE DESIRING TO FILE A COMPLAINT.  HOWEVER, PERSONS FILING FALSE OR FRIVOLOUS REPORTS COULD FACE CRIMINAL PROSECUTION.

COMPLAINTS MAY BE MADE IN PERSON, IN WRITING, VIA EMAIL, OR OVER THE TELEPHONE, OR THROUGH THE ONLINE FORM BELOW.  AFTER THE INVESTIGATION IS COMPLETE, THE COMPLAINANT WILL BE NOTIFIED.

TO SCHEDULE A TIME TO MAKE A COMPLAINT, PLEASE CONTACT LT. KEITH CROSBY AT 843-549-2211 EXT. 2053 OR FILL OUT THE CONVENIENT ONLINE FORM BELOW.

PLEASE NOTE: AFTER FILING A COMPLAINT, INTERNAL AFFAIRS WILL CONTACT YOU.  PLEASE ALLOW 24-48 BUSINESS HOURS FOR A RESPONSE.

FUNCTIONS OF INTERNAL AFFAIRS

PERSONNEL WHO ENGAGE IN SERIOUS ACTS OF MISCONDUCT OR WHO HAVE DEMONSTRATED THAT THEY ARE UNFIT TO HANDLE LAW ENFORCEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES MUST BE REMOVED FROM THE OFFICE FOR THE PROTECTION OF THE PUBLIC, FELLOW EMPLOYEES, AND THE OFFICE.

EMPLOYEES MUST BE PROTECTED AGAINST FALSE ALLEGATIONS OF MISCONDUCT.  ALTHOUGH BEING THE SUBJECT OF AN INVESTIGATION MAY BE UNPLEASANT OR UNCOMFORTABLE, THE BEST PROTECTION FOR AN EMPLOYEE IS A COMPLETE AND THOROUGH INVESTIGATION CONDUCTED IN A TIMELY MANNER THAT SUPPORTS THE EMPLOYEE’S HONESTY AND INTEGRITY IF THAT IS INDEED THE CASE.

OUR OFFICE IS OFTEN EVALUATED AND JUDGED BY THE ACTIONS OF ITS MEMBERS.  IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT THE ENTIRE ORGANIZATION NOT BE SUBJECTED TO PUBLIC CENSURE BECAUSE OF THE MISCONDUCT OF ONE MEMBER.  WHEN THE PUBLIC IS CONFIDENT THAT THE OFFICE HONESTLY AND FAIRLY INVESTIGATES AND ADDRESSES ALL ALLEGATIONS AGAINST ITS MEMBERS, IT IS LESS LIKELY THAT CITIZENS WILL RAISE A CRY OF INDIGNATION OVER ALLEGED INCIDENTS OF MISCONDUCT.
